“If you want to be the best at horse boarding,” says Mike, “you have to do what you do best.”
Mike is a veteran board game designer who has been board game design since the early ’90s, and has worked with more than 100,000 board game enthusiasts worldwide.
Mike was part of a team of game designers that helped create and sell the board game Monopoly to the Disney Corporation in 1994.
“I am very fortunate to have had a career in the board games industry,” Mike says.
“The opportunity to be a game designer, to have a portfolio, to make the boardgame industry work for me was a dream come true.”
Mike and his team created a game called The Wheel, which he says he will always remember for its simplicity and depth.
“When we came up with the idea, I said to myself, ‘You know what?
I don’t want to make a game where I have to go out and make it like the classic Monopoly games.
That would be boring.
I want to do something that’s very much about you, and you can have a very unique way to make your own games.’
I took the idea and built it in a very simple way that was very intuitive.”
Mike says he wanted to make something that was “not necessarily about you” and had “no rules.”
“We wanted to create a game that you could create your own way, and we had a very loose and very creative way of thinking about the game.
You can really change things up and have fun with it.”
Mike created the board that has been sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, and now his company has launched a line of board games and cards.
Mike has a second design in the works.
“My goal with this game is to try to be in the market as much as possible for the next generation,” he says.
As a board game maker, Mike has learned that there is no one “right way” to make board games.
“A lot of people have a good idea of what they want from a game, but the rest of the game is going to have to be something else,” he explains.
“And it’s not always about the box, and it’s definitely not about the cards.
It’s really about how you design the game.”
